Q: What is the mission of the CEF?
A: The Cresskill Education Foundation (CEF), created in 1990 is a broad based, non-profit community organization. Its purpose is to raise funds to support excellence in education through educational, artistic and cultural enrichment programs.
Q: What types of programs does the CEF fund?
A: A wide array of programs and initiatives are funded, ranging from technology, to the arts, to reading, writing and arithmetic, to staff development, to building better schools. The programs may target a specific grade or an entire school. Please see the Grants page for some of our past initiatives.
Q: How is the money raised?
A: Funding is derived through various means. These include: Our annual membership drive, the annual Concert for the Arts, the sale of Certificates of Appreciation honoring staff and faculty, the Cresskill Elementary Theatre Experience’s (CETE) annual production performed by the District’s 4th and 5th graders, and new in 2016, Bark for Education – our canine costume contest and carnival. Over the years there have been various other fundraisers such as Concerts 4 Kids and the Circus. We are constantly on the lookout for new fundraising ideas and sources, and welcome your input.
Q: How is the money spent? What is the grant process?
A: Each year, the District (teachers and administrators) submit grant proposals to the CEF Board. Designated members of the Board then meet with the school administrators to gather their input. Recommendations are taken back to the CEF Trustees who discuss and vote on the final selection and funding levels of the projects.
Q: What is the tax status of the CEF?
A: The Cresskill Education Foundation, Inc. was incorporated in the State of New Jersey in 1990. It has been designated by the United States Internal Revenue Service as a non-profit organization under Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Donations and contributions made to the Foundation are fully tax deductible to the extent allowed by applicable law.
Q: How many board members are there, and what do they do?
A: There are 17 Board members. The number of Board members (called Trustees) may vary from year to year. The main goal of all our Board members is fundraising for the District. Each member participates in committee work of his or her choice, and assists with the annual fundraising activities.
Q: How does the CEF differ from the HSA or PTA?
A: The Parent Organizations and the CEF are two separate organizations with a similar vision: to enrich the lives of the children in Cresskill. The HSA of Merritt and CHS/CMS and the Bryan School PTA function solely within their respective schools. The CEF operates primarily from the outside in, working together with the principals and superintendent as well as businesses, professionals and other resources to raise money and explore/implement innovative initiatives for the entire District.
Q: Can I join both the CEF and the HSA or PTA?
A: Absolutely. Many of our members belong to several of these organizations.
Q: Is it possible to volunteer my time without becoming a Board member?
A: Yes, by joining one of our committees and working on fundraising. This offers you an opportunity to gain exposure to the CEF and see whether or not you would like to become a Trustee.
Q: Who can I contact about volunteering?
A: Please contact any one of our members. Please see the CEF Trustees page. Or email us at [email protected].
